The study is scientifically led by an expert Steering Committee chaired by senior trialists from the University of Oxford. Members include national representatives from each of the countries involved with the study and people with relevant medical or statistical expertise.

An independent committee of experts known as the Data Monitoring Committee also watches over the study during its progress in order to safeguard participants. This committee could stop the study early if there was important new information from this or other studies that affected whether the EMPA-KIDNEY study should continue.

The EMPA-KIDNEY study has also been approved by a national ethics committee (Oxford C Research Ethics Committee, Ref. No. 18/SC/0155). This committee has checked that the health question being asked is important enough to warrant a study, and that the study is being carried out in an independent, honest and professional manner.
